Madhuri Dixit on doing her own stunts in Mrs Deshpande
Even at 58, Madhuri Dixit is on a roll with delivering impeccable performances and narrating stories that are a subtle reminder of why she is a superstar. After her four-decade-long career, the actress continues to break stereotypes – this time, by performing her own stunts in Mrs Deshpande.
In the Nagesh Kuknoor series, the diva`s character is trained in Krav Maga, the Israeli self-defence martial art. While the name of the series gives a slice-of-life feel, it dives deep into thrills and murder mystery.
In a conversation with the Hindustan Times, Madhuri shared why she chose to do her own stunts when there was a safe option of using a body double in the show.
She said. "It should look real; it should look believable that a woman who is so petite and looks like a normal housewife can do something like that. It has to look authentic. There`s also an element of surprise in that."
Madhuri Dixit on taking on dark roles without hesitation
While female actors have explored negative roles, it is not usual for a mainstream star to portray a menacing and ruthless killer. The Gulaab Gang actress thanks the audience and their perspective for this shift.

"Times have changed, and the audience has changed. During the lockdown, people were watching a lot of series and movies from different parts of the world. They began to understand what layers are and how characters work. They have started liking those things. The audience has matured to a considerable extent due to their exposure," she said.
Dixit emphasised her love for breaking rules and added, "Having said that, if you look at my career, I started with Abodh. I did some films where I played a supporting role, and yet, I managed to be where I am. So, I think rules are made to be broken."
"Somewhere, we needed to do that. It is path-breaking that women are getting these kinds of roles, and we have directors like Nagesh who think like that. And we need more directors who think like that," she concluded.
Helmed by Nagesh Kuknoor, the murder mystery series also stars Priyanshu Chatterjee, Kavin Dave, and Siddharth Chandekar in prominent roles.
Mrs. Deshpande is now streaming on JioHotstar.
